The Year of Primož Trubar 2008

The year 2008 marks the 500th anniversary of the birth of Primož Trubar (1508–1586), a Protestant reformer and the consolidator of the Slovenian literary language.

Primož Trubar is one of the most important pillars of Slovenia's cultural and national identity, and thus a figure who has inspired us to take an active stand in preserving and promoting our language. Therefore the Government of the Republic of Slovenia decided at its 148th session on 28 November 2007 to declare the year 2008 for the Year of Primož Trubar. The working committee for honouring the 500th anniversary of the birth of Primož Trubar, which is part of the Coordinating Committee for State Celebrations, has approved a calendar of events listed in a booklet published on this occasion which will be updated regularly on this web site.

Throughout the year, Slovenian towns and municipalities will be organising various events, many of which will also take place beyond our borders, mainly in Germany.

On the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the birth of Primož Trubar, the Government of the Republic of Slovenia also appointed an Honorary Committee, which will be chaired by the President of the Republic of Slovenia, Dr Danilo Türk.

The anniversary has been listed on the UNESCO list of anniversaries.
